Welcome to Mansion House for the fourth in our series of Scale Up Showcase events – and the first to focus on Defence and National Resilience.
As Lady Mayor of the City of London, I am an ambassador for the UK's financial and professional services sector, connecting capital to opportunity. Today, we continue that work – bringing some of the best of British defence and dual use innovations together with the investors and customers who can help it scale.
The United Kingdom and our allies face a growing range of serious security threats – physical, cyber and more. With war close by, many of those threats are starkly visible. Others are harder to see, but no less real.
The Government's recent Strategic Defence Review underlined the need for the UK to prepare for new forms of conflict – increasingly shaped by data, autonomous systems and artificial intelligence. Government cannot meet that challenge alone. It will take the innovation, ingenuity and pace of the UK's thriving technology sector. And that is why today matters.
You will meet companies capable of helping to answer that need – selected from a highly competitive field according to the National Armaments Director framework. Twenty-one companies are presenting today, looking to raise £350 million, with almost 100 investors in the room. That is a formidable concentration of British ideas, ambition and capital.
The City of London Corporation is hugely grateful to the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, for once again running these showcases on a volunteer basis. They have helped connect extraordinary talent with much-needed growth capital. Today, we have the opportunity to do the same for businesses that can strengthen our national defence and resilience.
The City of London has a long association with the UK's Armed Forces. We understand that our prosperity, our freedom to do business and our position as a global financial centre all depend upon security – at home and around the world.
So today is about more than investment. It is about matching the financial firepower of the City with the technological firepower of the next generation of British defence – turning ingenuity into capability, capital into resilience, and innovation into greater security for us all.
Thank you for being here, and for backing the businesses that will help defend our nation, strengthen our resilience and protect our future.
Competition for a place today was fierce. The companies below narrowly missed selection this time — and deserve your attention.
